TradesUp Initiative is committed to providing under-targeted and marginalized students with the resources and support they need to succeed in the technical trade industry. Our programs focus on hands-on training, mentorship, and career development to empower the next generation of skilled workers.

Who are we?

Founder/Executive Director Marc Lopes

Marc A. Lopes is a 20 year shipbuilding with General Dynamics Electric Boat. Marc spent 7 years as a skilled labor mechanic before being developed into a leader at Electric Boat currently in the role of Manager of Operations. His extensive knowledge of trades work and knowledge proficiency allows him the ability to drive core trade development at the grass roots.

TradesUp Initiaitive's Approach

TradesUp Initiative will focus on 4 core technical trade fields to illuminate the opportunities for early education students. These technical trades are listed below and will follow a strict curriculum aligned with CTE certifications to assist in students in school progress. 
All courses will follow the below requirements
- 40 hours of curriculum learning; 40 hours of practical welding experience (2 hour weekly shop floor applications); 120 hours paid internship and/OJT (on the job training)
  1. Welding 
  2. Pipefitting/Plumbing
  3. Electrical - Cabling,Fiber hookup & live safety connections
  4. Machining - hand work; CNC programming and finished work

TradesUp will work to inform, influence and enlighten local students on the opportunity that a career in trades would present. With 3.5 million jobs expected to be created over the next 4 years within the manufacturing and construction industries, it is vital to promote and elevate technical trade training amongst our communities. 

TradesUp's mission is to create a strong pipeline rooted in equity and inclusion while educating students early in development.
